Back in 1954 a General Motors locomotive (G12.7707, later SJ T42.205) arrived to Norway for some trial runs. As the result of the very good experiences a new-built NoHAB-GM locomotive (Nr. 2246, type MY) came to the land later the same year, and has come back again to Norway after a trip to Ankara, Turkey. This locomotive has been being a great success, and the NSB has ordered 34 more of this type from the NoHAB-factory until 1969, after the 2246 was classing in as Di3.602 in 1957. 32 (3.602 to 3.633) of the 35 pieces are Co'Co' locomotives, the rest were delivered with A1A'A1A' axle arrangement. The all-axle-powered type is better suited for the steepy Norwegian railroads, the 3 fast (top speed 143 km/h instead of 105) four-axle-powered Di3's were originally built for the Finnish State Railways, but the contract was canceled in the last minutes and those 5 machines were already since long time under construction. The construction of the first 3 units were in such an advanced condition, that the rebuilding to the Norwegian Di3 standard was impossible (or too expensive). The rest 2 of the 5 (3.622, 3.623) has come out from the factory in Trollhättan as a normal Di3-unit, the only difference is the longer chassis (18900 mm instead of 18600).

The Norwegian story of the Di3's was the biggest success a locomotive can achieve. The locomotives were in duty for much longer time as planned, also because sometimes some 40 years younger locomotive-types couldn't perform the oldies' duties. Despite all, there will be will be no more official scheduled Di3-runs in Norway. When train 476 arrived to Trondheim on 6th January 2001 with the Di3.629 and Di4.653 at the front, an epoche was over. The legendary beauties gave their last concert and will disappear from ordinary duty. One more of them will belong to Jernbaneverket instead of the 605, some more will preserved by the museum and railfan associations (602, 616: museum/ GM-Gruppen , 603: Jernbaneklubb), one will be stationed at Finse for some "krishjelp" for the Winter, four (619,633,641,643) were sent to Kosovo as an aid from the Norwegian state, four (622,626,630 and 621 or 631) will belong to a Sicilian private railway company and maybe... Maybe our NoHAB-GM Foundation will be also able to preserve one...

1024x768, 111901 bytes. The oldest Di3 in duty is running with the Trondheim-Hamar fast train at the small stop "Gildseth Skole". Nowadays this train is also a BM93 trainset - like every former Di3 passenger turns... Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 71758 bytes .

1024x768, 122949 bytes. The Gt 5794 is running back to Trondheim at the end of the career of the Di3 series. Picture was taken on 24th June 2000. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 79101 bytes .

1024x768, 123227 bytes. The "Double-Eight". The bridge at Åsen is a very good position to enjoy the majestic 567-music. This train (Gt 5794) is stopped at the station and is starting to Trondheim upwards to the hill. At the beginning of the hail the driver shifted the controller to the eight position to accelerate the heavy train as fast as he can and the singing of the engines filled the awakeing valley with the unforgettable lovely sound. Picture was taken on 24th June 2000. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 79204 bytes .

1024x718, 111135 bytes. A symbolic picture. The double-Di3 headed 5794 is running back to Trondheim and is crossing with the double Di8-headed 5791. The Di3's were the motive power for every freights here since ages, but some years after the arrival of the Di8 series in the mid-90's they disappeared for ever until the end of year 2000. Picture was taken at Åsen on 24th June 2000. Also available in smaller size: 800x561, 70750 bytes .

1024x768, 86382 bytes. A classic Norwegian freight train is running down to Trondheim with Di3 619 and 628. Picture was taken on 24th June 2000 near Vudu. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 54623 bytes .

1024x768, 66487 bytes. The end. The poor 3617 at Trondheim-Marienborg in June 2000. Loco was whitdrawn in October 1999. The loco behind is the 3620. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 42497 bytes .

1024x768, 123280 bytes. The old 3615 waits it's destiny at Trondheim-Marienborg in Summer 2001. The loco caught fire in April 1999 on it's way back from the Raumabanen and wasn't repaired anymore because of the available earlier stopped spare-Di3's. Both bogies were moved under another Di3 and this loco was put aside after the failure. It will be probably the sparepart-basis of the museum-units (3602, 3616). Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 82691 bytes .

1024x768, 133510 bytes. The 3610 is standing in the maintenance hall at Trondheim-Marienborg in Summer 2000. The loco was put aside in 1995, but will be probably restored by the GM-Gruppen for operation with charter trains. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 90067 bytes .

1024x768, 66487 bytes. A nice present for the fans. The train which normally shouldn't be there. Because of the problems with the new BM93 trainsets the NSB prolonged the Di3's service with some more weeks at the Raumabanen. The picture shows the Sunday's Trondheim-Dombås between Kongsvoll and Hjerkinn on 1st October 2000. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 42497 bytes .

1024x768, 66487 bytes. A lovely memory. One of the last duets on a passenger train: the 472 (Bodø-Trondheim) at Steinkjer on 29th September 2000 with Di3 628+619. The NSB used normally Di4's on the Trondheim-Bodø-Trondheim fast trains in the 90's, but many times the good old Di3's helped them - alone or two. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 42497 bytes .

1024x768, 82000 bytes. This locomotive with manufacturer's number 2416 was originally built for Finnland, but the contract was canceled and the first of the three four axle powered "almost Di3's" was sent to Norway for trial runs. In spite of the fact that the starting tractive power is much smaller because of the A1A' A1A' axle arrangement and the higher gear ratio, the NSB found the locomotives able to drive the normal Di3 turns until the end of the service of the series. In this picture the loco (later Di3.641) is waiting for depart on one of it's trial runs with a temporary number (Di 41.01). Photo: P. Matsson / NoHAB. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 53757 bytes .

1024x603, 86660 bytes. The second Di3 on it's way to Kosovo some minutes after it's arrival to Budapest. Picture was taken by Ádám Jakóts on 25th January 2001 at Budapest-Ferncváros. Also available in smaller size: 800x471, 57022 bytes .

1024x768, 47183 bytes. The Di3.641 is running on a bridge over road 84 near Sopron on it's long way to Kosovo. Picture was taken by Károly Jánosa on 3rd February 2001. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 31668 bytes .

1024x768, 86801 bytes. The Di3.641 and 633 at Sopron on it's long way to Kosovo. Picture was taken by Sándor Tóth at Sopron on 3rd February 2001. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 57535 bytes .

1024x768, 81230 bytes. After some 41 years an other Di3 arrived to Hungary. The NSB sent the 3619, 3633, 3641 and 3643 to Kosovo as an aid from the Norwegian state. Picture was taken by Sándor Tóth at Sopron on 19th January 2001. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 53386 bytes .

1024x768, 171803 bytes. "Let the show begin for the last time". Now we know, that on 29th of October 2000 tha last Di3-hauled nighttrain was running out from Åndalsnes. This picture was taken some one year earlier on 4th of August 1999, when the late 3620 did it's last week at the Raumabanen after almost 41 years in service. In early October the same year this good old engine was scrapped. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 101163 bytes .

1024x768, 85687 bytes. A very hard-earned photograph. I thought there is a way in the woods at the side of the small town Hell, but the name of the village says all. After some 2 hours of "jungle-fighting" i've found a good place (it was about some 6-700 meters away from my starting point), and took the photograph. The NSB gave a small gift to the NoHAB-enthusiasts: the passenger traffic of the Meråker line was done by the Di3's instead of the BM92 DMU's between Summer 1999 - Summer 2000. Picture was taken on 24th of June 2000 between Muruvik and Hell (train 387 Trondheim-Storlien). Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 54398 bytes .

730x768, 105352 bytes. From the same place. Also available in smaller size: 570x600, 67450 bytes .

1024x768, 118175 bytes. One of the three big stonebridges of the Raumabanen (Dombås-Åndalsnes): the Stuguflåten bru near Bjorli. This line is a very hard one for the motive power with steeps over 2%. The NoHABs does a brilliant job here since more than 40 years. Picture was taken near Bjorli on 20th of June 2000. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 79544 bytes .

1024x768, 83324 bytes. Picture was taken near Fiva on 21st of June 2000. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 53731 bytes .

558x768, 83015 bytes. Two masterpieces of the world's engineers: the NoHAB-GM and the Kylling bru at Raumabanen (Dombås-Åndalsnes). The Di3.623 does the same brilliant performance nowadays as it did 40 years ago and the Kylling bru is still so beautiful as it was in 1922 when it was ready. This view is the same since 1959 but will be no more available after 29.10.2000. Old bridge, new train - will they go well with each other? One thing is sure: the new BM93 DMUs (Talbot Talent) are the motive power for personal trains of this line since the date above. This legendary loco-type will say goodbye also in Norway this year. Picture was taken near Verma on 20th of June 2000. Also available in smaller size: 436x600, 54264 bytes .

506x768, 59365 bytes. The swan-song of a legendary loco-type in Norway: the Di3.623 on the 75 years old Raumabanen (Dombås-Åndalsnes). The new BM93 DMUs (Talbot Talent) will be the main motive power for personal trains of this line after 1.10.2000. After this date there will be no more Di3's in normal duty at the NSB - but after the experiences with the Di6's and newly with the Singnature trainsets maybe there is still a slight chance for the fans to hear the majestic GM-sound sometimes if nothing goes as expected... Picture was taken on 21st of June 2000 near Marstein at the Raumabanen. Also available in smaller size: 395x600, 37855 bytes .

1024x768, 77968 bytes. A nice surprise. Normally there are no more freights with Di3's in Norway after 10.06.2000, but there is a plan and here is the reality. It's still a knotty problem to find the replacement for the fantastic reliable Di3's - and it means that sometimes these good old locos are again in the limelight for some scheduled runs, but in the last days of the old century they were taken out of duty for god. Also available in smaller size: 800x600, 51213 bytes .
